Benefits The Matthew Renk Foundation

Princeton Academy

Two Princeton Academy sixth-graders combined doughnuts and dodge ball for a school fundraiser that raised nearly $2,000 to help support those facing the challenges associated with brain cancer.

Jack Borden, of Stockton, and his friend classmate George Wright, of Lawrenceville, organized Princeton Academy's first "Donut Dodgeball" on Dec. 10 to benefit The Matthew Renk Foundation, a non-profit that generates awareness of childhood brain cancer and provides support for families facing this difficulty. Students participated by purchasing donuts during lunch and/or paying the $5 fee to enter into a dodge ball tournament.

The students sold more than 800 doughnuts and got 75 participants to sign up for the tournament, which helped raise $950. However, Borden said that a benefactor would be doubling that figure, resulting in a grand total of $1,900.

"It feels good because we know it's going toward a good cause," Wright added. "It could change someone's life for the better."

Borden explained that his family was friends with the Renks. When their son Matthew died from brain cancer at the age of 15, the parents formed the Matthew Renk Foundation in his honor. This inspired Borden to hold a fundraiser to support their cause.

Head of Middle School Kathleen Humora commended the special service project as well as the cause it was supporting.
